One of my favorite hikes in Alaska. This mine offers history and hikes for all levels including families with children. I'm from Palmer, and this is a must see for anyone coming to visit me from the lower 48. Season is Memorial Day - Labor Day weekend to park at the visitor center. However, you can park and walk up to the mine anytime. Great place to cross country ski and snow machine also in the winter. Independence Mines is a true step back in time. You will get an amazing sense of how difficult life must have been to these miners and their families. Great exhibits. The excellent ski slope! Perfect sightsee view and a lot of snow in November! Great day! Really cool history that you can actually see. Learn about mining at your own pace on the self-guided walking tour, all the while surrounded by the breathtaking Talkeetna Mountains. Snow stays in this area pretty late. I've been knee deep in late May, bring snow shoes until June. First time I've been back in 40 years. Much has been improved in the display of artifacts and buildings. We had a great time, even in the rain and the free tour was worth more than the party entry fee. It wasn't cheap though. $5 for car and driver, with another $3 or so for passengers adds up when bringing a bunch of kids.
